As a building block for our metabolism, folic acid fulfills important tasks. Also known as vitamin B9 or vitamin B11, folic acid is sometimes involved in cell division, growth processes and the formation of red blood cells. A deficiency of the vitamin is generally more widespread in the European population than one might think. In particular, people with various illnesses or in special circumstances, as described in the next section, can be affected.

Folic acid deficiency has numerous causes
Folic acid is naturally ingested almost exclusively through food. For example, spinach, lamb's lettuce, kale, legumes or even whole grain products and tomatoes are rich sources of folic acid. Under certain circumstances, however, not enough folic acid can be supplied in this way or not sufficiently utilized by the body. Chronic intestinal diseases, advanced age, intolerance of the small intestine to gluten, malnutrition and excessive alcohol consumption can often lead to a folic acid deficiency that cannot be compensated for through food intake. In order to provide the body with sufficient folic acid, folic acid AL can be taken. The drug is available in tablet form, making it flexible and easy to take with water.

Contraindications
