What are Dulcolax® dragées?

Dulcolax® Dragées is a laxative in the dosage form of gastro-resistant tablets.They are used to gently relieve constipation and for diseases that cause stool constipation and require easier evacuation of stools.Dulcolax® dragées can also be taken if bowel evacuation is necessary before treatment measures, operations and diagnostic measures to detect illnesses.

Dulcolax® dragées - double effect against constipation

How are Dulcolax® dragées used?

Dulcolax® dragées can be taken by adults and children aged 2 and over.Use in children and pregnant women should be carried out after medical consultation.In addition, Dulcolax® dragées are also suitable for taking while breastfeeding, as they have been proven to have no influence on breast milk.

Dosage of Dulcolax® dragées:

• Adults and children aged 10 and over: 1 to 2 tablets as needed (equivalent to 5 to 10 mg bisacodyl)
• Children from 2 to 10 years: 1 dragée (equivalent to 5 mg bisacodyl)

This is how Dulcolax® dragées are taken:

• once a day in the evening or morning, the onset of effect occurs after 6 to 12 hours
• if you take Dulcolax® dragées in the morning, you should be fasting
• a single application is usually enough to clear the blockage
• if symptoms recur, re-application is possible
• long-term use can be carried out after consultation with a doctor

The dragées should best be taken whole and with plenty to drink.Taking it in the evening causes the bowel to empty after around 10 to 12 hours.When used in the morning on an empty stomach, the effect occurs after approx. 6 hours.

Please follow the instructions in the package leaflet and your doctor or pharmacist regarding use.Disturbances of the electrolyte balance or habituation effects1 are not to be expected if taken over a long period of time and as directed.

Important note: Any use of the active ingredient bisacodyl contained in Dulcolax® dragées beyond short-term intake can increase intestinal sluggishness.

Instructions for taking

• Like other laxatives, Dulcolax® dragées should not be taken daily or for a long period of time unless a doctor is consulted or the cause of the constipation is unclear.
• Dulcolax® dragées contain lactose, sucrose and yellow orange S
• The dragées do not help reduce weight.
• Different laxatives should not be used at the same time.Taking different laxatives together can cause or increase side effects in the gastrointestinal tract.
• The maximum daily dose of 2 tablets for adults and 1 tablet for children aged 2 to 10 years should not be exceeded.

The simultaneous use of diuretics or corticosteroids can increase the risk of electrolyte imbalances if Dulcolax® dragées are used excessively.Electrolyte shifts may increase sensitivity to cardiac glycosides.

When should Dulcolax® dragées not be taken?

You must not use the medicine if:

• Allergies to bisacodyl, yellow orange S, lactose, sucrose or any of the other ingredients.
• Complaints such as nausea, vomiting or abdominal pain.These can indicate a serious intestinal disease (e.g. intestinal narrowing with impaired intestinal passage, inflammation of the abdominal and intestinal area, intestinal obstruction, etc.) that requires medical clarification.
• Diseases that are associated with a disturbed water and mineral salt balance.
• Children under 2 years

What side effects can occur when using Dulcolax® dragées?

As with taking other laxatives and medicines, using Dulcolax® dragées as intended can cause unwanted side effects.

The following selection of side effects are known:

• Common (affects 1 to 10 users in 100): Diarrhea, abdominal cramps, abdominal pain and nausea
• Uncommon (1 to 10 treated in 1,000): Vomiting, dizziness, blood in the stool, abdominal and intestinal discomfort
• Rare (1 to 10 users in 10,000): Hypersensitivity reactions
• Unknown frequency: Swelling of the skin and mucous membranes, short-term circulatory collapse, increased loss of water, severe allergic reactions

Please do not use this medicine after the expiry date stated on the pack or outer packaging.The expiry date refers to the last day of the specified month.

Contraindications

If you are known to be hypersensitive to any of the above ingredients, this product should not be used.This product is not suitable for children under 2 years.If you have abdominal pain, nausea or vomiting, or are lactose or sucrose intolerance, the dragees must not be taken. The product should not be used if the water or mineral balance is disturbed.

Dosage

Recommended use of Dulcolax dragees - laxative for constipation with bisacodyl:

You can take Dulcolax dragees - laxative for constipation with bisacodyl whole with liquid if necessary, ideally in the evening before going to sleep.The bowel movement takes place the next morning after getting up.Adults can take 1 or 2 tablets once a day and children aged 2 to 10 can take 1 tablet once a day.
To avoid an overdose, this dose should not be exceeded.

  • Laxatives should only be taken for a short time without medical advice.
  • If you have chronic constipation, you should ask your doctor for advice before taking it.
  • Increased fluid loss can lead to dehydration.This can have harmful effects in certain circumstances (e.g. in patients with impaired kidney function or in the elderly).In such cases, taking the drug should be interrupted and only continued under medical supervision.
  • Patients reported blood in their stools, which were generally described as mild and resolved on their own.
  • Dizziness or brief attacks of loss of consciousness (syncope) have been reported in patients taking this medicine.According to the corresponding case reports, these are probably syncope, which can be traced back either to the laxation process itself, to the pressing, or to circulatory reactions due to abdominal pain.
• Children
  • The tablets must not be used in children under 2 years of age.
  • In children, the tablets should only be used on medical instructions.

• Ability to drive and use machines
  • No studies on the effect on the ability to drive and use machines have been conducted.
