Patient information

  • Warnings and Precautions
    • Please speak to your doctor or pharmacist before using the preparation.
    • Before ingestion, calcium and alkali absorption from other sources (e.g. food, enriched food or other medicines) should be observed. If high doses are given on calcium together with alkaline agents (such as carbonates), this can lead to a milk alkali syndrome (burnett syndrome). The milk alkali syndrome is a calcium metabolism disorder with an increase in the blood-calcium level. It can be triggered by absorbing very large amounts of milk and/or calcium carbonate from other sources or by excessive use of antacids (agent against stomach acidification). This can lead to side effects such as an increase in blood calcium level (hypercalcalcemia), metabolic alkalosis (due to the metabolism increase in blood-pH value), kidney failure and soft tissue calcification. Therefore, regular medical monitoring of the calcium levels in the blood is required.
    • During long-term treatment, the blood calcium level should be checked and the kidney function should be monitored by measuring the serum creatinine values. Monitoring is particularly important in older patients and in patients who receive cardiac glycosides and diuretics as accompanying medication. This also applies to patients with a pronounced tendency to form stone formation. If a calcium level that is too high in the blood (hypercalcemia) or signs of kidney dysfunction, the dose must be reduced or the therapy can be canceled.
    • Vitamin D may only be used carefully in patients with kidney dysfunction and under monitoring the calcium and phosphate levels. The risk of calcification of the soft tissues must be taken into account. Vitamin D in the form of Colecalciferol is not used by patients with severe kidney dysfunction. Therefore, these patients should receive other vitamin D preparations.
    • Additional intake of calcium and vitamin D may only be carried out under medical control, including a weekly review of the blood and urine calcium level.
    • In patients who suffer from sarcoidosis, the preparation should only be used with caution, since the risk of increased conversion of vitamin D into its active form insists. The calcium levels in the blood and urine should be monitored in these patients.
    • Certain tumors such as lung cancer (bronchial carcinoma), breast cancer (breast cancer), kidney cancer (hypernephrom) and blood cancer (plasma cytoma) can cause increased calcium level in the blood. The medicine should be used with caution in these patients. The calcium levels in the blood and urine should be monitored.

  • Wateriness and ability to operate machines
    • There is no data on the influence of this drug on the traffic or operating machines. However, an influence is unlikely.

Pregnancy

  • Pregnancy
    • During pregnancy, the daily dose should not exceed 1500 mg of calcium and 600 i.E. vitamin D3. This medicine should not be used during pregnancy and lactation due to the high dosage of vitamin D.
    • In pregnancy, an overdose must be avoided because, for a long time, hypercalcaemia in the child can lead to physical and mental developmental disorders, supravalvular aortic stenosis and non-inflammatory retinal diseases. However, there are also several case reports, which show that mothers suffered from reduced or lack of production of parathormone after taking very high vitamin doses. There is no evidence that vitamin D in therapeutic doses in humans act teratogenic.
  • Breastfeeding
    • Calcium and vitamin D3 pass into breast milk. This should be noted if the child receives additional gifts of vitamin D. This preparation should not be used during breastfeeding due to the high dosage of vitamin D during breastfeeding will.

Hints

Read the package supplement and ask your doctor or pharmacist for risks and side effects.
