Cardio First Angel© — a mechanical resuscitation device to increase the effectiveness of lay resuscitation

The Cardio First Angel© consists of three units and is designed to be compact (dimensions 110 mm x 170 mm) as a disposable product based on the requirements.

The central unit is a stable PE plastic base plate on the underside of which a liquid-absorbing and body-compatible foam has been applied for even pressure distribution. The "device" should lie directly on the thorax in the lower third of the corpus sterni. The point of orientation is the lower edge of the breastbone.

A complex arrangement of several helical springs is attached to the base plate, which transfers the force of the user to the thorax. A force of 400±30 N, which generates a compression depth of 50-60 mm, is accompanied by a clearly audible clicking sound. This noise serves as acoustic feedback of sufficient resuscitation.

The central component for the user is the circular, signal-red pressure plate, through which the pressure is transferred to the thorax of the person to be resuscitated. The most important steps for quick and safe use are printed directly on it (Figure 1, 2).

The underside of the Cardio First Angel© consists of stable, pressure-equalizing and liquid-absorbing polyurethane (PUR) soft foam and is placed directly on the skin over the breastbone. A clearance certificate for the use of the PUR foam (KO-T902DH type 1.9H) is available (Figure 3).

If the Cardio First Angel© is used according to the pictogram in the operating instructions, it should lie on the lower third of the corpus sterni (breastbone) according to the general guidelines of CPR (1) (Figure 4). Thus, the pressure is optimally transferred to the heart muscle inside the bony thorax.
