Lactulose AIWA® 670 mg/ml oral solution

Lactulose AIWA® contains a laxative called lactulose.Lactulose draws water into the intestines and thereby softens the stool so that it can pass through the intestines more easily.It will not be absorbed into your body.

Lactulose AIWA® is used:

• To treat the symptoms of constipation
• To treat a specific liver disease (portocaval encephalopathy)

Application

Always take this medicine exactly as described in the package leaflet or exactly as your doctor has told you.

Take your doses at the same time each day.The dose can be given once a day, for example at breakfast, or given in two divided doses per day.Swallow the medicine quickly.Don't keep it in your mouth.You can take Lactulose AIWA® oral solution undiluted or diluted in liquid.Use the measuring cup provided.

You should drink sufficient fluids during treatment with laxatives (approximately 2 liters/day, equivalent to 6-8 glasses).

It can take 2 - 3 days for the desired effect to occur as lactulose is only broken down in the large intestine.Long-term use of inappropriate doses (exceeding 2-3 loose stools per day) or improper use can lead to diarrhea and electrolyte imbalances.

Notes

Due to the manufacturing process, this medicine contains small amounts of digestible carbohydrates, which, however, are only absorbed into the body from the intestine to a relatively small extent and therefore have almost no nutritional value.However, please note that this medicine contains digestible carbohydrates in 15 ml of syrup, e.g.B. contains fructose (fruit sugar), galactose, lactose (milk sugar), which corresponds to a maximum of 0.21 BE.Higher amounts of this medicine are required, particularly when treating portocaval encephalopathy, and an adjustment to your antidiabetic medication may be necessary.

Please do not use this medicine after the expiry date stated on the pack or outer packaging.The expiry date refers to the last day of the specified month.

Contraindications

• The medicine must not be taken,
  • if you are allergic to lactulose or any of the other ingredients of this medicine.
  • if you under
    • Have galactosemia (a serious genetic defect in which galactose cannot be digested)
    • acute inflammatory bowel disease (such as Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis), obstructions in your intestines (other than normal constipation), perforations or risk of perforations in the gastrointestinal tract, or stomach pain of unknown origin.

Dosage

• Always take this medicine exactly as described in this leaflet or exactly as your doctor or pharmacist has told you.Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are unsure.
• Take your doses at the same time each day.The dose can be given once a day, for example at breakfast, or given in divided doses up to three times a day.
• The recommended dose is:
  • For constipation:
    • Starting dose
      • Adults: 15 - 45 ml
        • equivalent to 10 - 30 g lactulose
    • Maintenance dose
      • Adults: 15 - 30 ml
        • equivalent to 10 - 20 g lactulose
  • Use in children and adolescents
    • Adolescents over 14 years of age
      • Starting dose: 15 - 45 ml
        • equivalent to 10 - 30 g lactulose
      • Maintenance dose: 15 - 30 ml
        • equivalent to 10 - 20 g lactulose
    • Children (7 - 14 years)
      • Starting dose: 15 ml
        • equivalent to 10 g lactulose
      • Maintenance dose: 10 - 15 ml
        • equivalent to 7 - 10 g lactulose
    • Children (1 - 6 years)
      • Starting dose: 5 - 10 ml
        • equivalent to 3 - 7 g lactulose
    • Newborns
      • Starting dose: up to 5 ml
        • equivalent to up to 3 g lactulose
• The dose can subsequently be reduced individually.
• The daily dose should be taken as a single dose at breakfast.It may take 2-3 days for the desired effect to occur, as lactulose is only broken down in the large intestine.
• For portocaval encephalopathy (impairment of brain function due to liver disease)
  • At the start of treatment: 30-50 ml 3 times daily (equivalent to 60-100 g lactulose).
  • The dose should be adjusted to achieve 2-3 soft stools per day.The stool pH should be between 5.0 and 5.5.
  • There are no specific dosage recommendations for elderly patients or patients with renal or hepatic impairment.
• Use in children and adolescents
  • Safety and efficacy in children aged 0 to 18 years have not been established.

 

• If you have taken more than you should
  • An overdose may cause diarrhea and abdominal pain.Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you have taken more than the prescribed dose of lactulose.
    

 

• If you forget to take it
  • If you forget to take a dose of lactulose, simply take the next dose at the usual time.Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed dose.

 

• If you stop taking it
  • The desired effect of the medicine may not be achieved.

 

• If you have any further questions on the use of this medicine, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

• You should drink plenty of fluids while being treated with laxatives (approximately 2 liters/day, equivalent to 6-8 glasses).

Information for patients

• Warnings and precautions
  • Please talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Lactulose.
  • If you suffer from gastrocardiac syndrome (Roemheld syndrome), inform your doctor before taking Lactulose.
  • If you experience symptoms such as flatulence or a feeling of bloating after use, stop treatment and consult your doctor.In such cases, the doctor will carefully monitor the treatment.
  • Long-term use of inappropriate doses (resulting in more than 2-3 soft stools per day) or misuse can lead to diarrhea and electrolyte imbalances.If you are an elderly patient or in poor general health and take Lactulose for more than 6 months, your doctor will regularly check your blood electrolyte levels.
  • Patients with portosystemic encephalopathy should avoid the concomitant use of other laxatives, as this prevents individual adjustment of the dosage.Please do not use Lactulose for longer than two weeks without medical advice.
  • Due to the manufacturing process, Lactulose may contain traces of sugars.If you have been told by your doctor that you have an intolerance to some sugars, seek medical advice before taking this medicine.
  • You should drink plenty of fluids while being treated with laxatives (approximately 2 litres/day, equivalent to 6-8 glasses).
  • Children
    • The medicine should not normally be given to infants and newborns, as it may interfere with normal bowel movement reflexes.
    • A doctor may prescribe lactulose for a child, infant, or newborn in special circumstances.In such cases, the doctor will carefully monitor the treatment.

 

• Driving and using machines
  • Lactulose has no effect on the ability to drive or use machines.

Pregnancy

• If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.
