Field of use

• The medicine is a thyroid drug. It contains potassium iodide as an active ingredient and is used to prevent an iodine deficiency goiter and to supplement the iodine requirement at the same time.
• The medicine is used for:
  • Prevention of a goiter development with existing iodine deficiency,
  • Prevention of a new goiter development after completion of treatment (thyroid hormone dating or surgery) of an iodine deficiency crop,
  • Treatment of a goiter in children, adolescents and younger adults.

Contradictions

• The medicine must not be taken,
  • if you are hypersensitive (allergic) against potassium iodide or one of the other components of the drug,
  • in the case of thyroid overactive,
  • in the case of benign hormone -forming nodes or uncontrolled, hormone -forming districts of the thyroid gland,
  • in hypocomplementememic vasculitis (inflammation of the vessels) and
  • in dermatitis herpetiformis duhring (chronic skin inflammation).

dosage

• Always take the medicine exactly according to the instruction. Please ask your doctor or pharmacist if you are not quite sure.
• Unless otherwise prescribed by the doctor, the usual dose is:
  • Children and adults take one tablet a week. The maximum single dose is a tablet. The dose for toddlers (under 6 years) is ½ tablet a week. Your doctor decides in individual cases whether a dose increase is necessary.
  • The preventive administration of the drug must generally be carried out for years, often for life. The duration of the usage will be decided by the medicating doctor.

 

• If you have taken a larger amount than you should
  • If you have taken a larger amount of the drug than you should, please contact your doctor immediately, he will decide on any necessary measures.

 

• If you have forgotten the intake
  • The intake recommendation "once a week" already shows that the drug does not always have to be taken exactly on the same day of a week. It is advisable to adhere to distances of 7-10 days. If you have forgotten the weekly intake, You can make up for this over the next few days. But do not take the double dose at once.

 

• If you cancel the intake
  • If you interrupt the intake of the drug or prematurely, e.g. B. Due to a side effect, canceled, please contact your doctor.

 

• If you have any further questions about the application of the drug, ask questions You your doctor or pharmacist.

Taking

• After a meal with sufficient liquid (e.g. half a glass of water), take the medicine. Especially in children, it is recommended to mix with food (e.g. soup) or a drink. The tablets disintegrate easily and can therefore also be dissolved in juice or water. This type of intake is particularly recommended for infants and children.

Patient information

• Particular caution when taking the drug is required
  • Before taking the medicine, it should be checked whether a thyroid overactive or a knot crop is or is known. If the knot crop of the tablet, an overactive thyroid could be brought about with the tablet intake.
  • If you suspect an iodine -mediated hypersensitivity reaction, a differentiated approach is required. Head of sensitivity reactions to iodine -containing X -ray contrast agents or allergic reactions to iodine -containing food are usually not triggered by the iodine content.
  • On the other hand, you know the rare reaction to an iodine -containing drug, such as: B. hypocomplementemic vasculitis (inflammation of the vessels) or dermatitis herpetiformis duhring (chronic skin inflammation), they may not be treated with iodine -containing medication, since higher iodine doses trigger an aggravation of the underlying disease.
  • Older people
    • In individual cases, an iodine -related thyroid overactive can occur in older patients with long goiter.

 

• Wateriness and operating machines:
  • There is no evidence that iodide affects the traffic, operating machines or working without a firm hold.

 

Pregnancy

• Ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking/using all drugs.
• Iodide and iodine-containing preparations should only take place under benefit-risk assessment on the express regulation of the doctor.
• Pregnancy
  • Both an iodine deficiency and iodine overdose can lead to damage to the unborn child during pregnancy.
  • There is an increased iodine requirement during pregnancy, so that sufficient iodine intake is particularly important. So far, no risks have become known when using iodine preparations with doses of up to 200 µg daily.
  • Since iodine crosses the placenta and reaches the unborn child, higher doses should only be taken with a clinically proven iodine deficiency in order to avoid underfunction of the thyroid gland and a goiter formation in the unborn child.
  • Due to the very high iodine content and the intended intake of 1 tablet per week, an application of the drug during pregnancy is not recommended. During this time, pregnant women with daily low iodine cans that are necessary to maintain physiological iodine levels should be treated.
• Breastfeeding
  • There is an increased iodine requirement during breastfeeding, so that sufficient iodine intake is particularly important. So far, no risks have become known when using iodine preparations with doses of up to 200 µg daily. Iodine is excreted in breast milk and enriched there.
  • Due to the very high iodine content and the intended intake of 1 tablet per week, an application of the drug during breastfeeding is not recommended.
  • During this time, breastfeeding mothers with daily low iodine cans that are necessary to maintain physiological iodine levels should be treated.

Miscellaneous

- In the event of a sensitivity to iodine, taking the depot preparation can lead to fever, rash, itching and burning the eyes, irritable cough, diarrhea or headache. In this case, the therapy must be ended.
- Before the planned application of iodine and iodine -containing preparations, it should be checked whether there is a thyroid overactive or a knotty goiter. This applies especially to adults and planned iodine treatment, since in this situation with the possibility must be expected to cause a thyroid overactive. Further diagnosis is indicated in the event of suspicion.
- The administration of iodine (especially in high doses) or iodine -containing medication may make a planned treatment of thyroid overfunction, hormone -producing thyroid tumors and malignant thyroid tumors impossible.
- If a malignant thyroid tumor is suspected, iodine gifts should be avoided in any form.
- In addition, the gift of high iodine cans can influence the thyroid examination and lead to errors if the assessment is appropriate. This applies especially to thyroid metabolism examinations and iodine metabolism studies.
